Difference between lacquered glass and silk screen printed glass

Both lacquered glass and screen printed glass can achieve multiple solid colors on glass. So what is the difference between them, and how to choose the proper glass for decoration?

Lacquered glass is also called oil painted glass. It is very bright-colored, and the colors can be any color you can image. Some companies let the paint dry by natural withering. But it is better to dry in in a low temperature about 30-45℃, so the colors are more durable. The disadvantage of lacquered glass is that, the colors are not quite stable, may pill off after a certain time, especially in wet conditions. 

Silk screen printed glass is produced in high temperature. The colors are forever stay on glass, not fading colors or pill off from glass. Another benefits is that, screen printed glass are heated to about 700℃, by the high temperature and cooled rapidly, printed glass have the high strength of tempered glass, also resistance to temperature change. 

By the production method, paint on screen printed glass is more smooth than lacquered glass. Also screen printed glass can make more complex colors and patterns.

In this condition, if we choose solid color glass for wall decoration, like kitchen splashbacks, we can choose lacquered glass. But if we need an uper grade finishing, or more complex designs, it is better to have the screen printed glass, to achieve the best finishing of your concepts.

How does low emissivity glass works?

Low-E glass (low emissivity glass) is to apply a ultra thin metal oxide layer on one side of glass. This layer practically invisible to naked eyes, and make the glass to increase energy exchange by radiation between the two face of glass. How does insulated glass works?

Insulated glass is multi-layer glass glazing unit. It is usually made of two panes of glass, which were seperated by a sealed air space, about 6mm to 21mm of width. The glass could be consists of float glass, tempered glass, laminated glass, printed glass... double glazed insulated glass or triple glazed insulated glass. About colors, there are too many designs for conception, insulated glass is totally a custom sized glass product. 

So why we use insulated glass and how does it works?

The best part of insulated glass is that, it is sound resistance and heat insulation (enery saving). People use it for external curtain wall of modern buildings, it take both advantage of trend touch and functional. 

The principle of the insulating glass unit is based on the fact that unmoved air is a bad thermal conductor. The air space enclosed between the panes therefore forms a good heat insulating layer. As a result, the energy loss compared to a single glazing is significantly reduced. In addition, the pane on the peripheral side does not cool so much, thus reducing the room temperature. This is shown by the heat transfer coefficient (U-value): In the case of single glazing it is about 4.8 W / (m²K), whereas in modern insulating glazing it is <1.0 W / (m²K). The latest three-pane insulating glazing even achieve U values ​​of 0.5 W / (m²K). 

To use functional glass like low-E glass or coated reflective glass, will make the insulated glass units have even better performance of U value.

It is the same principle of sound control. The thicker air space used, the better performance to reduce sound transmission.

Acid Etched Glass And Sandblasted Glass

Acid etched glass and sandblasted glass can be created with variety of decorative designs on glass or mirrors. It is also a functional glass that allow sunlight through, at the same time it is translucent that provide different degree of privacy for people.

Sand blasting glass is usually considered as acid etched glass. They are both translucent and frosted. But the surface of acid etched glass is more smooth and looks more elegance. 

Acid etched glass is produced by chemical acid liquid to frost the surface of glass. Sandblasted glass is produced by machine that grinding the surface. Too thin glass is not suitable for sand blasting, but acid etched glass will not have this limitation. 

To creat patterns especially complex designs on glass and mirrors, acid etched way is much easier than sand blasting. Acid etched glass may a bit expensive, but have much better looking.

What is gradient glass?

Gradient glass (color changing glass) is an interesting new decorative glass but it is rapidly accepted by modern building designs.

We have two ways to produce this gradient glass. Gradient film or silk screen printing on glass.

Gradient film

It is a film printed with many many round dots, big dots to small dots. To see it far away from, it give a vision of gradient glass. The disadvantage is the film is not durable, maybe scratched and color fading under sunlight.

Silk screen printed glass

Silk screen printed gradient glass is the similar way. Print round dots on glass, big and small dots. The color is forever, and the printed gradient glass is durable. 

Gradient glass can be single pane or laminated glass. Popular colors are white, yellow, blue, green...
